SDM and Land Use Planning
April 16, 2013
Tim Wilson of Compass was invited to present at a recent Planning Operations for a Common Landscape Technical Session offered by the Canadian Institute of Forestry - Rocky Mountain Section (CIF-RM). Tim’s talk focused on the benefits and lessons of using a SDM process within an ongoing multi-stakeholder linear footprint management planning pilot in the Stony Mountain area of Alberta. Using an SDM process the large and diverse planning group, consisting of representatives from oil sands and forest industry companies, Aboriginal and Metis communities, recreation groups, hunters, trappers and guide-outfitters, agreed upon strategic objectives, performance measures, and potential management alternatives to evaluate. The process now awaits the results of simulation modelling to allow for group deliberation of the tradeoffs between management alternatives.
