The Future of Rural Communities
April 1, 2014

On February 6, 2014 Dan Ohlson returned to his alma mater to serve as a panel member at the 2014 UBC SCARP Student Annual Symposium “Embracing Complexcity.”  This Symposium comes together each year to explore opportunities and trends toward building resilient and inclusive cities and regions in the face of deeply complex environmental, social, and economic challenges.

Dan was a member of the panel on The Future of Rural Communities: The Urban-Rural Interface, which explored how the rural-urban interface shapes governance, decision-making with regard to future economic growth, and sense-of-place within the rural context. Dan used several case study examples to explain the application of Structured Decision Making (SDM) in helping rural communities work through challenging problems and choices regarding resource development occurring around their communities.
