Chris Joseph Publishes Environmental Assessment Paper
July 17, 2015

As part of his PhD research at Simon Fraser University, Compass Associate Chris Joseph developed a broad and comprehensive definition of what a good environmental assessment (EA) process looks like. Chris synthesized ideas from the EA literature as well as ideas from the megaproject planning, international development, risk, stakeholder, expert, law, and other literatures, and then tested controversial ideas through a survey of EA experts across Canada.

This research examined topics as varied as who should make final decisions, how EA processes should be audited, legal obligations of involved parties, how experts should be engaged, and how Aboriginal rights should be addressed, and led to a list of 74 recommended practices in 22 themes. In June of this year the paper written on this research was accepted for publishing by the EA journal Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal.
